Freedom Quest provides free, community-based, client-centered, low-barrier, confidential, voluntary, and non-judgmental services and programming to youth who are, or who are risk of being, adversely affected by substance use in the West Kootenay Boundary Region. Freedom Quest’s services and programming support young people in experiencing new opportunities, overcoming barriers, preventing further adversity, building positive relationships, and developing the confidence and skills for life.

Program Summary

The Bike Shop Program is an activity-based therapeutic program that supports young people aged 12-19 and their adult mentors in building healthy relationships with each other, other participants, and the facilitators of the program. The program is focused on supporting youth who have been adversely impacted by, or who are at risk of being adversely impacted by, substance use. With their adult mentors and through the shared experience of mountain biking and mountain bike repair and maintenance, youth will a) be invited into a sport that may have previously been inaccessible to them, b) be introduced to programming that facilitates healthy relationships, c) participate in physical activity to promote their overall wellness, and d) learn new skills.

Position Summary

The Bike Shop Program Coordinator is a member of the Leadership Team and is an active member in management-level decision making within their program.

The Bike Shop Program Coordinator is anticipated to allocate their time to the tasks below, however, they have the flexibility to manage their own schedule and task list according to the needs of program participants as well as to the needs of the agency and the contract.

Program Planning:

prepare an evaluation plan
advertise the program
cultivate community partnerships
develop program documents
seek out and develop program activities
conduct youth intake interviews
conduct mentor intake interviews
spearhead program planning meetings


provide support to co-facilitator
ensure adequate debrief time
ensure compliance with FQ policies
ensure the program timeline is adhered to
ensure safety procedures are followed
collaborate with Team Lead regarding reporting requirements
ensure administrative deadlines are met

Program Facilitation:

plan recreational outings
coordinate with mentors
coordinate with community partners
coordinate with youth
plan meals and transportation
facilitate program activities
book recreation equipment
schedule Bike Shop drop-in hours


manage program budgets
collect program data
provide case management
prepare statistical, outcome, and narrative reports
attend general staff meetings

Knowledge Skills, and Abilities


A degree in child and youth care, social work or related field. A combination of education and experience that would be equivalent may be accepted.


Experience working with youth who have been negatively affected by substance use
Experience working with youth in an outdoor/wilderness setting
Extensive experience mountain biking
Experience with mountain bike repair and maintenance (or a willingness to learn)
Experience facilitating risk management
Experience working with groups
Experience working in a counselling capacity
Experience working from a harm-reduction, client-centred, strengths-based, attachment and trauma-informed approach

Other Requirements:

Valid Driver’s License (Class IV, unrestricted preferred)
Wilderness First Aid
Reliable Vehicle
Criminal Record Check
